Sentence seeds: Grow a sentence


The person walked down the street.

  1. Identify their occupation
  2. Include an appositive with the person’s name  
  3. Replace walked and street with more concrete word choices
  4. add adjectives for the person and the street
  5. Add adverbs and/or adverbial phrases to tell when and how the action took place
  6. Relate why this action took place.




The person cleaned.

  1. Identify the person
  2. Add adjectives to describe the person
  3. Specify what they cleaned and describe
  4. Teel how they cleaned it and what they used to complete the  job
  5. Relate the purpose of cleaning.

Goals:  To analyze the plot structure, literary elements,  and narrative techniques of a short story.  To begin formulating ideas and writing  our own story. 


Agenda:

Grow a sentence.  I will give you two sentences to "grow".

Go to Kidblog (log in with Google).  Publish your sentences from today.  Then, comment on at least THREE other people's work.  You will draw names. 

Read "The Secret Life of Walter Mitty" by James Thurber.

Goals: To complete a well-written academic summary of an expository article. To continue participate in discussions about our book club book using academic language.

Agenda:

Book club meeting-I will come by to check your jobs.  You will put your matchbook and other papers in your group folder.

Finish Newsela quiz if not finished last block day.

Review the template and example for writing an expository summary.

Write expository summary of your article.  Peer feedback.

GOALS: To continue to improve on writing a summary of an expository article, as well as our annotating skills.  To participate in a meaningful discussion of our book club book using academic language.

Meet with your book club.  Mrs. Karney will come around and check your job.  If you finish before the other groups, begin reading for your next meeting!
